Should bathroom fitters be VAT registered?

VAT can change how your prices look to domestic customers, so it is worth understanding early rather than waiting until the threshold catches you.

As of 9 June 2026, GOV.UK says you must register for VAT if your VAT taxable turnover goes over £90,000 in the last 12 months, or you expect it to go over £90,000 in the next 30 days. You can also choose to register voluntarily below the threshold.

Track rolling turnover, not just year-end turnover

A common mistake is only looking at your tax year. VAT registration is based on VAT taxable turnover over a rolling 12-month period, so you need to keep an eye on it every month.

If your bathroom fitting business is growing, set a reminder to review turnover regularly. Do not wait until your accountant spots it months later.

Why some fitters avoid VAT

Many bathroom fitters work for domestic homeowners who cannot reclaim VAT. Once you are VAT registered, adding VAT can make your quote look higher than a non-VAT registered fitter, even if your labour price is similar.

That does not mean you should hold the business back. It means your pricing, positioning and quote explanation need to be sharper.

Why voluntary VAT registration can still make sense

Voluntary VAT registration may be worth discussing with an accountant if you buy a lot of materials, work for VAT-registered builders or developers, or want the business to look more established. You may be able to reclaim VAT on qualifying business costs.

For mostly domestic bathroom work, the decision needs care because the customer usually sees the final price including VAT.

Show VAT clearly on quotes

If you are VAT registered, your quote should make the VAT position clear. Customers should understand whether a price is excluding VAT, including VAT, or broken down into net, VAT and total.

Simple quote rule: do not surprise a domestic customer with VAT after they have already compared prices.

Price for profit, not just the threshold

Some fitters stay under the VAT threshold by turning down work or not growing. That can be right for some lifestyle businesses, but it can also trap you below where the business could be.

If you want to grow beyond one person, you need proper pricing, better lead quality, controlled quoting time and a clear reason customers choose you beyond being the cheapest.
